In 1961 the ideas of a fashionable western science of that time – cybernetics – started to penetrate into KhNAHU. The new Department was organized that had a laboratory equipped with several stands for automatic devices at its disposal. Later other laboratories were added equipped with digital electronic computers "Promin" and later "Nairi-2". Production of analog modeling units for computer engineering began.

In 2001 the department was headed by Levterov AI In 2005 the department of informatics became a part of faculty of mechatronics of vehicles. In 2007, the Department of Informatics organized the All-Ukrainian scientific-methodical conference "Problems of using information technology in the educational process of technical universities at the stage of implementation of the principles of the Bologna Declaration" at KhNADU In 2010 the department was headed by O. Ya. Nikonov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Laureate of the Prize of the President of Ukraine. In 2013, the Department of Informatics was merged with the Department of Mechatronics of Motor Vehicles. The new department was named the Department of "Information Technology and Mechatronics". In November 2016, as a result of reforming the structure of the university (liquidation of the Faculty of Computer Technology and Mechatronics), the Department of Information Technology and Mechatronics was divided into two departments - the Department of Informatics and the Department of Computer Technology and Mechatronics. The Department of Applied Mathematics was attached to the Department of Informatics and the Department of Informatics was renamed the Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics.

Presently the staff of the Department regularly makes reports at national and international meetings, conferences and symposia on machine dynamics, modeling, automated electric drive, management science, etc.
